The City of Greenville adds parking guidance system to River Place garage as part of ongoing initiative to improve the visitor parking experience and air quality in downtown district.

The City of Greenville was looking for a reliable parking guidance system to help alleviate the congestion and bottle neck issues within the River Place garage. The downtown parking structure is open to the public as well as serving hotel guests and local business employees. It also features ADA and EV spaces. However, its unique layout made it difficult to find open spaces and was easy to get lost in. “We were receiving more and more complaints from customers who were having trouble finding open spaces,” said Pamela Corbin, City of Greenville Parking Services Manager. “If you are unfamiliar with this garage, it can be difficult to navigate and easily find a parking space.”

That is when the decision was made to invest in a parking guidance system. “We were looking for a system that allowed our customers to quickly find a parking space, without having to repeatedly drive around the garage searching for one,” added Corbin. Parking Guidance Systems, LLC installed the INDECT system to address the problem with new wayfinding signage directing parkers throughput the garage. The UPSOLUT multi-function camera sensors not only signal an open space with a green light (red means occupied), but they also monitor the spaces providing an added layer of security. “It’s a win-win for the City of Greenville,” said Matthew Valera, Director of Municipal Sales for PGS, LLC. “The customer can now easily find a space and cars spend less time wandering through the garage, resulting in lower emissions.” The City of Greenville is known for applying initiatives to help address air and water quality. The multi-level garage consists of 624 spaces. PGS installed 154 Upsolut sensors and 10 internal signs to cover the entire garage. “Since its introduction, the parking guidance system has significantly reduced calls from customers unable to locate parking, creating a greater level of service to our patrons. In addition, the desktop application allows staff to look at available parking spaces in the event that we receive calls,” Corbin said in closing.
